SCORM vs xAPI: What's the Difference and Which Standard Does Your LMS Need?

SCORM, xAPI, AICC, cmi5 — most LMS vendors list the standards without explaining them. Here's what each one tracks, when to use SCORM or xAPI, and four questions to ask your LMS vendor before you sign.

If you've spent any time evaluating LMS platforms, you've seen the acronyms: SCORM, xAPI, AICC, cmi5. Most vendors list them as supported standards without explaining what they actually do or why it matters for your organization.

Here's the plain-language version.

What Is SCORM?

SCORM stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model. It's a set of technical standards that defines how e-learning content communicates with an LMS.

When you buy or build a course and drop it into your LMS, SCORM is the language they use to talk to each other. It tells the LMS: this learner started the course, they answered question 4 incorrectly, they completed the module, and they scored 82%.

SCORM was first published in 2000 and has two versions in use today — SCORM 1.2 (still the most widely used version) and SCORM 2004. It became the universal language of e-learning because it was adopted early by most content authoring tools and LMS platforms.

What SCORM tracks well:

  • Course completion (pass/fail)
  • Quiz scores
  • Time spent on a module
  • Bookmarking (so learners can resume where they left off)

What SCORM doesn't track:

  • Learning that happens outside the LMS (a video watched on YouTube, a job shadowing session, a read article)
  • Granular interactions within a course (which specific question tripped a learner up, how many attempts they made before passing)

What Is xAPI?

xAPI (also called Tin Can API or Experience API) is SCORM's successor — a newer, far more flexible standard that tracks a much wider range of learning experiences.

Where SCORM is limited to tracking what happens inside a course inside an LMS, xAPI can capture learning from almost anywhere: mobile apps, simulations, job performance, social learning, video platforms, and more. It stores this data in a separate database called a Learning Record Store (LRS), which can sit inside your LMS or operate independently.

An xAPI statement looks like this: [Person] [verb] [object] — for example, "Sam completed the OSHA safety module" or "Alex watched 87% of the product demo video."

What xAPI tracks well:

  • Learning anywhere — inside or outside the LMS
  • Offline activity (syncs when connectivity is restored)
  • Granular interactions — every click, every attempt, every moment of engagement
  • Real-world performance outcomes — connecting training to job behavior
  • Mobile and on-the-go learning

What xAPI requires:

  • A Learning Record Store (LRS) to store the data
  • Content built to generate xAPI statements (not all authoring tools do this by default)
  • A slightly more sophisticated analytics setup to make use of the richer data

SCORM vs xAPI: Side-by-Side

Which Standard Does Your Organization Need?

Choose SCORM if:

  • Your training is primarily self-paced e-learning delivered through a browser
  • You're working with existing SCORM content you need to reuse
  • Your LMS doesn't include an LRS
  • Compliance tracking (completion + score) is your primary reporting need

Choose xAPI if:

  • Your workforce learns on mobile, in the field, or offline
  • You want to track learning beyond course completions — including job performance, video consumption, or informal learning
  • You're building or buying new content and want richer data
  • You have (or want) a Learning Record Store

The honest answer for most mid-market and enterprise organizations: you need both. SCORM for your existing content library, xAPI for new content and mobile delivery going forward. The right LMS supports both natively and lets you use each where it fits.

What About AICC and cmi5?

Two other standards you'll see in LMS spec sheets:

AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based Training Committee) is an older standard, predating SCORM, still used in some legacy enterprise content libraries. If you have AICC content, confirm your LMS supports it — many modern platforms do, but it's worth verifying.

cmi5 is the newest standard — built on xAPI's data model but designed specifically for LMS-delivered content. Think of it as xAPI with tighter rules about how content launches and communicates with the LMS. It's not yet widely adopted but is gaining traction in newer content authoring tools.

What to Ask Your LMS Vendor

Before signing a contract, ask these four questions:

  1. Which versions of SCORM do you support? (SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 are both relevant — don't assume.)
  2. Do you have a built-in Learning Record Store, or do I need a separate LRS?
  3. Can I import my existing SCORM content without rebuilding it?
  4. Does your AI course creation tool output SCORM, xAPI, or both?

WestNet LMS supports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, AICC, and cmi5 on every plan — and includes a built-in Learning Record Store so you don't need a separate system to capture xAPI data. New courses built with WestNet's AI course creation tool publish in SCORM or xAPI format, your choice.

If you're evaluating platforms and want to see standards support in practice, book a demo and we'll walk through how your existing content would import.
